Mouchel Group is an international infrastructure and business services company headquartered in Woking, England. It designs, delivers, operates and maintains large-scale infrastructure projects which support communities around the world.
In the United Kingdom, Mouchel works with government agencies, local authorities and regulated industries to provide safe and reliable roads, effective and well-managed local education and civic infrastructure, clean water and cost-effective energy.
Mouchel is part of Kier Group Plc, the sector leader in the growing UK highways management and maintenance market.

The Challenge

Mouchel had a very large scope of work to complete during 2014. The overall “IT Transformation Project” (ITTP) had several workstreams including, but not limited to: Microsoft Exchange 2003 to Microsoft Exchange 2013 migration; Microsoft Lync 2013 installation; Active Directory to Office 365 Federation; PC replacements and upgrades from Windows XP to Windows 7; Active Directory migration and flattening.
As part of this project, SystemsUp was employed in several key areas. One of these was to ensure the migration of 7000 users from three Active Directory user domains with two disparate Microsoft Exchange 2003 forests to one forest containing a single Active Directory user domain and a resource domain containing Microsoft Exchange 2013.

The Approach

Faced with an incredibly tight schedule of just eight weeks before the first user migration was due to take place, SystemsUp was able to use their tried and tested assuredDelivery® process to gather requirements, discover the incredibly complex environment and then produce High Level designs and migration approach documents in order to provide Mouchel with a clear path to migration success.

The Solution

SystemsUp recommended Dell Migration Manager to ensure this complex task could be undertaken, could accommodate a long coexistence period and ultimately, complete the migration with no impact to users or services throughout the project.
Before the migration, Mouchel were using Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager 2007 to provision, manage and synchronize user accounts in the user domain and the corresponding user object that existed in the resource Microsoft Exchange 2003 domain. Due to the slightly divisional nature of the business, two resource forests existed for Microsoft Exchange 2003 with a 75/25 split of users with no GAL synchronization, or visibility between the two systems.
SystemsUp were very tightly integrated with the Mouchel IT team during the project, providing expertise on all areas in its scope but here, crucially, for Microsoft Exchange 2003 and Microsoft Exchange 2013 as well as Dell Migration Manager. A complex pre-staging phase meant there was a need to see users from both source environments as well as cross-migrated users from the two systems in the new environment.
During the coexistence phase, there was also a need to see all public folders and resource mailboxes from both environments, sometimes with cross-environment access and SystemsUp worked very hard with Dell to ensure this was achievable.

The Result

Ultimately, Mouchel was able to successfully migrate 7000 users to Windows 7 desktops, with federated Office 365 services including OneDrive for Business and Exchange Online archiving, Lync (on-premises) and Exchange 2013.
SystemsUp is proud to have worked with such a good team and been an integral part of the success of the project.

“The transformation programme had multiple streams with interlinking dependencies, which, combined with some ageing legacy infrastructure presented a very complex environment to work in,” explains Michael Lord, Head of Mouchel IT Client Delivery. “SystemsUp got to grips with this very quickly and were able to help accelerate the process for Mouchel in a short time period. SystemsUp worked really effectively with the internal Mouchel IT team which ensured a rapid and safe transformation process.”
