“Virtualisation has been very
successful for the MCA, helping us to
meet many of the objectives of the Greening
Government ICT strategy. It has allowed
us to consolidate many of our servers
onto much less hardware whilst at the
same time increasing our resilience
for critical systems. VMware virtualisation
tools have also been a key part of the
MCA's secure desktop solution, whether
thin client or standard PC based client.
All the project objectives were professionally
delivered - on time and within the SystemsUp
project framework.”
The scope of SystemsUp’s involvement
with the Maritime Coastguard Agency
continues to increase significantly
in response to new requirements. These
requirements centre on reducing the
management burden of supporting their
complex environment, increasing security
(compliance with the Government Secure
Intranet) and implementing green IT.
Objectives have been met using combinations
of best of breed technology and SystemsUp’s
scalable Prince 2 methodology. All internal
systems have been built in compliance
with the Government Security Policy
Framework.
Virtualisation has proven crucial for
consolidation, improving test and development
and reducing the administrative burden
of desktops. The integration of Novell
and Microsoft technologies has ensured
that new ways of working can be accommodated
going forward. A security hardened Active
Directory single domain has been implemented
to replace the multi domain one.
Costs and carbon footprint have been
reduced through the consolidation of
server and desktop hardware. A fast
return on investment for Virtualisation
Software and services has been made
possible through power savings and the
avoidance of purchasing new server hardware
in addition to reduced administrative
burden.
As a 999 service, systems availability
is literally a matter of life and death.
The high availability functions of Virtualisation
and a new more streamlined process for
test and development have significantly
contributed to wider business continuity.
The MCA can now ensure the stability
of the production environment as new
applications are tested more rapidly
with a broader range of system configurations
ensuring defects are captured and resolved
more easily.
A Virtual Desktop Infrastructure deployment
will reduce the administrative overhead
of supporting the desktop environment.
A more reliable environment, with simplified
deployments and support will realise
a fast return on Investment based on
avoiding costs associated with support
and provisioning. |
